GARDEN OF DISCOVERY, JAMES COOK HOSPITAL, MIDDLESBROUGH

The Garden of Discovery is designed to stimulate and enhance the sensory experience of children under 5 years old with severe physical and emotional learning difficulties. It forms a safe, uplifting, imaginative and meaningful environment for children, their families and the staff who care for them.

Inspired by the tropical voyages of local hero Captain James Cook, the garden is vibrant and colourful, enriched with an array of exotic, yet hardy plants from around the globe. A series of interlocking coloured walls and formal clipped hedges provide a secure, stimulating and private space, while textured paving, wind chimes and windsocks stimulate the senses of touch and sound.
